Beyond Punishment: A Collaborative School & Community Intervention Model for Student Substance Use
Monday, May 4
9:50 pm – 10:50 pm ET
Lake Anne
When a student is found with nicotine products, cannabis, or other substances on school grounds, the response should go beyond punishment and address underlying issues.
In this session, learn a replicable, low-cost intervention model that brings together school staff, community organizations, law enforcement, juvenile justice, and recovery support services in a coordinated response.
You’ll learn how one community developed a four-week, twice-weekly program that addresses root causes, reduces recidivism, and keeps students connected to their education. Leave with practical tools to build or strengthen similar partnerships in your own community.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the roles and responsibilities of partner agencies within a multi-agency substance use intervention model — including schools, community organizations, law enforcement, juvenile justice, and recovery support.
- Apply a wraparound intervention framework to design or adapt a structured, time-limited response program for students involved in school-based substance use incidents.
- Identify barriers to cross-sector collaboration and develop strategies to establish shared goals, communication protocols, and accountability among partner organizations.
